The necker is an important part of the Scout uniform and a symbol of belonging to the group. Rolling it neatly helps it sit comfortably and look smart.
Your child’s necker
A flat surface
Lay the necker flat on a table with the point facing away from you.
Start rolling from the long edge nearest you, keeping the roll tight and even.
Continue rolling until only a small triangle remains at the end.
Place the necker around the neck with the point at the back.
Secure it with a woggle, adjusting the roll so it sits neatly.
A tighter roll helps the necker stay in place.
Young people quickly learn to do this themselves - it’s a great independence skill.
If the roll loosens, just re‑roll from the start.
